
The University of Dar es Salaam is now accepting applications for partial scholarships for PhD and MSc students as part of a climate-resilient research initiative titled:
“Building a Resilient Seaweed Farming for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Tanzania.”
This program is funded by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) and carried out in partnership with the Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster Initiative (ZASCI) and local seaweed farming communities.
🌱 Project Summary
The project is focused on enhancing the resilience of seaweed farming through:
- Development of disease-free seaweed strains using tissue culture
- Implementation of climate-smart farming practices
- Modeling the impacts of temperature, rainfall, and sea level rise
- Conducting fieldwork in strategic farming zones: Bagamoyo, Mafia, Unguja, and Pemba
This initiative aims to provide scientific insight for policy reform and sustainable seaweed farming in Tanzania.

✅ Eligibility Requirements
PhD Candidates:
- A Master’s degree in Marine Science, Botany, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Aquaculture, or related fields
MSc Candidates:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Botanical Sciences, Aquaculture, or equivalent disciplines
Additional Criteria:
- Strong academic background and research motivation
- Willingness to conduct field research in the mentioned Tanzanian regions
- Interest in the nexus of climate change, seaweed farming, and livelihoods
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Previous marine research experience is a plus
